Skillset/UK Film Council Feature Film Production Workforce Survey 2008
7.6 Sources of information about training
As reported in the 2005 survey, the most common sources of training information indicated by respondents were colleagues (39%), and the trade press (31%).The Internet was less likely to be named in the present survey, but that is because it was not included as a specific answer category, unlike in the 2005 survey report. 9% of respondents gave this answer in the space provided for listing ‘other’ sources of information.

There were some differences between the occupational groups in terms of where they would normally look for training information, although the small sub-group sizes means that some apparent differences are unlikely to be statistically significant.
Those in editing/post production/VFX, production, and sound/electrical departments were the most likely to consult the trade press. Those in the costume department were more likely than others to consult public education institutions for information about training.Camera technicians were more likely than others to consult their guild for training information.Workers in make-up and hairdressing were most likely to consult colleagues; and those in production were the most likely to consult the Skillset/skillsformedia database.
There were also some differences by age.Younger respondents were more likely than their older counterparts to consult colleagues, universities/colleges, the internet, Skillset and the British Film Institute, but were slightly less likely than older respondents to look to guilds, unions and trade associations for training information.
Women were slightly more likely than men to use universities and colleges, and Skillset as a source of training information.
Workers from an ethnic minority group were more likely to have consulted Skillset for training information than their white counterparts, and despite the small number of ethnic minority respondents this difference was found to be statistically significant.
